MSDSP Big Ideas and Goals

‌Making Sense of Data, Statistics & Probability (MSDSP) focuses on data and statistics in the Common Core State Standards. The implementation focus is formative assessment.

Big Ideas:

  • Understand how to classify objects and count the number of objects in each category
  • Understand how to represent and interpret data
  • Understand statistical variability
  • Understand how to summarize and describe distribution

Course Goals

  • Reflect on the major ideas of K-8 data and statistics and examine how children develop those ideas (based on the Progressions)
  • Explore children’s thinking to reveal the issues children must work through to develop an understanding of data and statistics
  • Explore your own thinking and understanding of concepts of data analysis and statistical reasoning
  • Implement formative assessment strategies in your own classroom
